With a ton of news coming out for the Xbox 360 Call of Duty: World at War beta, many PC gamers have felt left out. Well in response to the criticism and concern, community manager Josh Olin made some posts about the PC beta last night:

Quote:
We've been focusing on this 360 BETA right now. Look, my logic is simple; there are more CoD gamers on the 360 than on the PC. That's not opinion, it's fact. As entertainers, we want to entertain as MANY people as we possibly can. So the 360 came first, you're absolutely right.

Does this mean we don't care about the PC? Hell no! I am a PC gamer, and always will be. So is our Associate Producer, Multiplayer Design Director, PC Director, and the entire team of engineers on the PC team. Now that the 360 BETA is out and in the wild, we'll have a little more time tweaking some things and ironing out the wrinkles. But you can bet that the bulk of the news coming out from now on will be about the PC BETA. Now it's your turn.

When is the PC BETA you ask?

So what was my M.O. with the 360 guys? You were all spectators, you should know what's coming already... The PC BETA will be released.... come on, all together now... SOON! =)

More info on how it will be released, when it will be released, etc will be made available next week.
And another post by him:
Grrr, one last thing =).

You have no idea what we've got in store for the PC folks. a month from now let's revisit this topic so I can do my round of "I told you so's" . Don't say we've shunned the PC community until you've seen what we've done for it.

I can say this, and call me a tease if you want, but when you see what we're doing in the way of mapping, modding, new PC features, servers, and general PC support, then you can go ahead and pass judgment on how we've treated the PC fans. But just because we do not have any news to tell just yet doesn't mean we hate PC gamers or put them on the back burner. It means we simply don't have anything to tell just yet.

Patience is a virtue.... Someone really wise and cool said that once, I'm sure. Obviously that's not me, but at least I can rip his sh*t off =P.

Oh, and @Diii, yes I come in tomorrow too - I won't stop until all the VIP's have their codes (except for this brief power nap between the hours of 4 and 10).
So keep holding on and we'll be getting some PC news soon enough! Thanks to FPSAdmin for finding these posts.

Activision has published an official press release today for the Xbox 360 multiplayer beta of Call of Duty: World at War. Here's what they had to say:

CALL OF DUTY®: WORLD AT WAR LAUNCHES MULTIPLAYER BETA FOR THE XBOX 360

Windows PC Multiplayer Beta Coming Soon
London, UK – 13th October, 2008 – The dogs of war are being unleashed today, as Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and developer Treyarch announced the launch of the multiplayer beta for Call of Duty: World at War on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Console players can guarantee themselves a token by pre-ordering the game at UK Game retail locations,* or online at http://www.game.co.uk/. Call of Duty fans that register to become members at http://www.callofduty.com are also eligible to receive a token, but these tokens are limited in supply, so register today. Additionally, Eurogamer will also be distributing keys from 5pm today on a first-come, first-served basis (http://www.eurogamer.net/).

Windows PC fans can expect a multiplayer beta soon and more information will be made available at http://www.callofduty.com/beta.

The Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer betas will provide players with an opportunity to play as U.S. Marines, German Wehrmacht, Japanese Imperial Army and Russian Red Army factions in a variety of game types (Team Death Match, Free-For-All, Capture the Flag and War), across three different maps:

• Castle: The Imperial Japanese Army faces off against the Marine Raiders in a daytime battle, located on the grounds of an ancient, Japanese castle.
• Makin: The U.S. Marine Raiders square off against the Imperial Japanese Army in a nighttime fight, set in an outpost on the Makin Atoll in the Pacific.
• Roundhouse: The Wehrmact will fight the Red Army to the bitter end in a daytime struggle that features tank and infantry combat, set in a desolate, war-torn European train depot.

The betas will last for a few weeks; however, the full battle will commence on 14th November, 2008 when Call of Duty: World at War is released to retailers nationwide.

Not long now, 3 maps and decent gamemodes will give us a good indication :)

JD, community spokespersonage:

Quote:
Hi everyone,

We're rapidly approaching the PC BETA, and as such I wanted to lay out a few key features to the PC version of CoD:WW, and what ramifications it will have on the PC BETA.

First, the entire key authentication / master server paradigm is changing for the first time in a Call of Duty PC title. In CoD:WW, you will be authenticating in-game against a more global master server. This server will keep track of and maintain unique Profile names (like a screenname) which will be tied to your CD Key. So while username / passwords will not be required to play our game, you will have globally unique profile names.

Why are we doing this? Because also for the first time ever in a Call of Duty PC title, we're bringing Friends and Invites (which are typically console staples) to the PC. So we have built-in Friends functionality. You can add friends, filter your servers by Friends (see which servers your friends are playing in), join their servers, etc. You can also invite any online friends to come join you in your current game. We didn't want the new Squad mechanics we've developed to get watered down on the PC, which is ultimately why we decided to bring you Friends & Invites, and thus globally unique profile names.

Now we understand that clan tags can change frequently, and it would be obnoxious and not very user friendly to keep changing your profile name. So we've added in clan tag prefixes, which will show up in-game. This should allow you to take full advantage of our Friends & Invites features, and still be able to make yourself more uniquely identifiable in-game.

So what does this have to do with the BETA?

You will be required to enter a CD Key for the BETA, much like you will when you get the full game this November. These PC keys will be available to all registered users of CallOfDuty.com, including any new users who sign up after the PC BETA releases. These keys aren't intended to limit the BETA to a certain number of players; they are here to allow you to create these unique profile names for our Friends and Invites features.

How will BETA servers work?

The PC BETA will pretty much be a limited MP distribution of our game. So you will be able to host your own servers, and GSP's will be able to sell BETA servers and put up as many dedicated servers as they'd like. All of this will function as if it were a regular Multiplayer game. It's important to note, that for the BETA, the dedicated server will be Windows only.

Will our XP / accounts / friends transfer over from the BETA?

No, all accounts will be deleted after the BETA, just like on the Xbox 360.

More specifics on when the BETA will be released, how it will be released, and where you'll be receiving your keys will be made available in my next update. Rest assured, we want to get you this BETA just as badly as you want to play it, so your patience is appreciated.

Regards,
-JD

So there ya have it, to get in the beta you just need ana ccount at http://www.CallOfDuty.com

No, the PC beta is not out yet, BUT it is close! News update from Call of Duty Headquarters:
We are pleased to announce that in anticipation of the high demand for game servers day-1 of the PC Multiplayer BETA, we’ve joined forces with GameServers to provide a fleet of dedicated servers to be standing and at the ready the day-of the PC BETA release!

GameServers will have servers all around the globe for players to enjoy. Everyone should be able to find servers with great pings with the coverage we’ll have!

For anyone else interested in hosting servers, when the BETA is made available to the world to download, you can upload the files to your datacenters and run as many dedicated servers as you’d like. Hosting a CoD:WW server will not be too dissimilar to running a Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare server. Note that for the BETA, the servers will be Windows only. Linux servers will be available for the retail game.

We want to have as smooth of a day-1 kickoff as possible, and we hope that our combined forces will provide just that!

Looking more and more likely this Friday night.

Admin Schleppy of Callofduty.com made a Cipher for the Release date of the CoD:WW beta, thinking that no one can crack it. CustomCoD.com's own SparksMcSparks proved him wrong by taking the challenge. Minutes later, the news broke out. The CoD:WW PC Beta is Rumored to be released Monday, October 27th.

The Cipher that Admin Schleppy posted is:

9 30 20 39 59 50 79 73 88 95 104 131 132 135 144 150 166 185 198 190 218 215 232 235 241 269 265 270 300 305 313 325 338 348 355 373

Solution: Subtract 10x the position minus 1. A = 1, " " = 0.

Answer: "It is scheduled for release tomorrow."

Probably a load of bollocks like all the other its our tomorrow threads but here's hoping.

So that codebreaker was bullshit, but the following isn't:

What does the PC BETA include?

3 Maps: Castle, Makin, and Roundhouse (yes, map hole fixed). All gametypes will be available, and your level cap will be set to 40.

And of course, in case you missed the memo, there will be a fleet of Day-1 servers provided by GameServers.com to ensure you find a lag-free server right out of the gate.

I see players in servers!!!
That's us testing. We've been testing all the day-1 servers, and preparing this thing for the launch. If you saw anybody in servers over the past few days, or tonight, that's us =). The good news is, all systems are go, and I can't wait to tear it up with you guys tomorrow!!!

How will this all go down?

The minute the BETA launches, an e-mail will be sent out to every registered user on CallOfDuty.com, informing them of the launch. You will simply need to go to your Account / Profile tab of your account and your code will be right there (not just yet, when the thing goes live). You’ll also see a nice big announcement here, and some PC BETA forums will be created.

The Account / Profile page will also have a mirror listing of all known mirrors where you can download the file. The file you download will require a key upon installation, which is where you’ll enter the code you find in your profile.

But my FilePlanet download has started, what does this mean?

Nothing. It means that if you are a paid subscriber, they are allowing you to pre-load the file (it's rather large). You will not be able to play without a key, and probably won't even be able to install it until they unlock the file. So please don't get your hopes up thinking you'll be playing tonight, because you wont .

Stay tuned!

Regards,
-JD

So hopefully it won't be too late tonight \o/

If your registered on Fileplanet you can also download it:

http://www.fileplanet.com/193625/download/Call-of-Duty:-World-at-War-Beta-Client

30 minute wait at the mo but i'd imagine we have all day before the keys are released.
